Do you need a dumpster permit in Washington?
On your own driveway or lot you usually don't. If the dumpster goes on the street, sidewalk or alley, here's what District Department of Transportation (DDOT) says:
- Dumpsters in public space go through DDOT's online permitting system (TOPS). A roll-off in the parking lane for work without a building permit uses the debris removal category; otherwise it's a Construction Staging Area permit.
- Permits are usually issued for up to a month (up to six months possible), with a monthly fee that rises the longer the container stays.
- No-parking signs must go up 24 hours ahead at metered spaces and 72 hours ahead at unmetered spaces.

Where to take what a dumpster can't
Paint, solvents, batteries, pesticides and other household chemicals usually aren't allowed in rental dumpsters. In Washington:
DPW takes household hazardous waste and electronics on Saturdays at the Benning Road transfer station (3200 Benning Road NE); the older Fort Totten drop-off ended in 2021.
