Dumpster rental FAQ

Answers to the questions people ask most about sizes, costs, permits and what you can throw away.

What is the cheapest dumpster size?

Usually the 10-yard. Fixr lists $250–$400 a week for a 10-yard residential dumpster (Fixr: dumpster rental cost (updated January 2025)). It suits small cleanouts and small remodels.

Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire junk removal?

It depends on the amount and whether you can load it yourself. For a big project spread over several days, a dumpster is often cheaper; for a few bulky items, junk removal can be simpler.

What size dumpster do I need for a roof?

For a typical house roof tear-off, a 20-yard is a common choice, but shingles are heavy. Tell the company the roof size and number of layers so they can check the weight.

How big is a 20-yard dumpster?

Usually about 22 feet long, 8 feet wide and 4 to 4.5 feet high, holding roughly 6 to 10 pickup-truck loads. Exact sizes vary by company.

Can you put paint in a dumpster?

Liquid paint usually isn't allowed. Many companies accept cans that are completely dried out; ask yours first.

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Often yes, but some areas or companies charge an extra fee for mattresses. Ask when you book.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in my driveway?

Usually not, because it's on private property. Check any HOA rules, and ask the rental company if your city has special requirements.

Who gets the dumpster permit?

Often the rental company. In New York City, permits for street containers must be obtained by a carting company or general contractor, not the property owner (NYC 311: dumpster or debris container permit).

Why do dumpster quotes vary so much?

Landfill fees, fuel, distance and local demand all differ, and companies bundle different numbers of days and tons into the base price. Compare quotes for the same size, days and weight allowance.

What is a dry run fee?

A charge some companies apply when the driver makes the trip but can't place or collect the dumpster, for example because the spot is blocked. Ask what triggers it before you book.

How much weight can a dumpster hold?

It depends on the company, the container and local road rules, and the price usually includes a set allowance. Ask each company for its allowance and its price per extra ton.

Can I put concrete in a 30 or 40-yard dumpster?

Often not in large amounts: it would go over the weight limit before the box is full. Many companies want concrete in a smaller dumpster. Ask first.

Can a dumpster go on my lawn?

Sometimes, but grass and soft ground can rut under the weight, and the truck may get stuck. Most companies prefer a hard surface. Ask before you plan on it.

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

It can mark or crack pavement, especially new or thin surfaces. Boards under the rails spread the weight; ask the company whether they use them.

Is a dumpster cheaper than junk removal?

For large amounts loaded over several days, usually yes. For a few bulky items, junk removal can cost less and save you the work. Get a price for both if you're unsure.
