Do you need a dumpster permit in New York?
On your own driveway or lot you usually don't. If the dumpster goes on the street, sidewalk or alley, here's what NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) says:
- A permit is required to put a dumpster or debris container on a city street or sidewalk, and each permit covers one container.
- The permit must be obtained by a carting company or general contractor, not by the property owner.
- For clearing out bulky household items, a DOT-registered carting company can arrange a "Bulk Item Refuse Container" permit for up to five consecutive days.

Local tip
Street space is tight in most of the city, so ask the company early whether your block allows a container and who will pull the DOT permit.
