How to read a dumpster rental quote

Two quotes for the same size can hide very different totals. Here's what each line means and what to ask before you book.

What's usually included

  • Delivery and pickup of one container.
  • A set number of days: often 7 to 14 for home rentals.
  • A weight allowance: the tons of debris covered by the price. Fixr notes most quotes include one, often a ton or more (Fixr: dumpster rental cost (updated January 2025)).
  • Disposal of ordinary debris up to that weight.

What can be added

Line itemWhat it means
Overage (per ton)Charged for weight above the allowance, measured at the landfill or transfer station scale.
Extra daysA daily fee once you pass the included rental period.
Trip or "dry run" feeCharged if the driver can't drop or collect the container: a blocked driveway, a car in the way, or an overfilled box.
Item surchargesSome companies charge per mattress, tire or appliance, if they accept them at all.
Permit feeIf the dumpster goes on the street and the company pulls the permit for you. See permits by city.
Fuel or environmental fees, taxSome companies list these separately from the base price.

Seven questions to ask every company

  1. How many days are included, and what does each extra day cost?
  2. How many tons are included, and what's the price per extra ton?
  3. Is there anything you won't take, or charge extra for?
  4. Is delivery and pickup included for my address?
  5. Do you handle the permit if it has to go on the street?
  6. What happens if the container is overfilled?
  7. Can I get the full price in writing?

Questions

Why do dumpster quotes vary so much?

Landfill fees, fuel, distance and local demand all differ, and companies bundle different numbers of days and tons into the base price. Compare quotes for the same size, days and weight allowance.

What is a dry run fee?

A charge some companies apply when the driver makes the trip but can't place or collect the dumpster, for example because the spot is blocked. Ask what triggers it before you book.
